What actually happens during deep sleep?

Deep sleep, clinically known as N3 (Non-Rapid Eye Movement Stage 3) or slow-wave sleep (SWS), is the most physically restorative phase of your nightly cycle. If sleep is your body's daily maintenance routine, deep sleep is the heavy-duty system overhaul. During this stage, your brain waves slow down to low-frequency, high-amplitude delta waves. Your blood pressure drops, your heart rate reaches its lowest point, and your breathing becomes deep, slow, and highly regular.

Core body temperature also plays a critical role. To initiate and sustain deep sleep, your core temperature needs to drop by about 1 to 2 degrees Fahrenheit. Late, heavy meals, intense evening workouts, or a hot bedroom force your body to expend energy cooling down, effectively blocking you from entering the deeper stages of N3 sleep.

How to React to the Data

When your wearable shows a sudden drop in deep sleep, the worst thing you can do is panic. Stress and anxiety about sleep (a condition known as orthosomnia) elevate cortisol levels, which actively prevents deep sleep the following night. It creates a self-fulfilling prophecy.
